Mukachevo today: how the city has changed during the war

Today, Mukachevo is the home and fortress to many Ukrainians. Already on February 24, the city began to host the first internally displaced persons. Today, about 22,000 IDPs are officially registered in the city, including more than 6,000 children. How is the city now living, and how has its rhythm changed since the beginning of the war?

✅ During the month, the local CAS and specialists of the City Council's Department of Social Protection worked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for registration of displaced persons to ensure the registration and issuance of certificates for internally displaced persons and relevant material assistance.

✅ Since the beginning of the war, dozens of volunteers have been actively working: looking for housing among locals, collecting humanitarian assistance, etc. The city council has created a list of accredited volunteer coordinators. The presence of volunteers in the register confirms the readiness of these coordinators for transparency in their work.

✅ More than 17,000 IDPs have found temporary shelter in the houses of locals, more than 3,000 people live in dormitories of the city.

✅ Mukachevo is undergoing active derussification. The city changes the names of streets, squares, and lanes, which are named after russian figures of politics, literature and art, dismantle Soviet monuments, and hold competitions for projects of renovated squares. Moreover, the Mukachevo City Council reports that yesterday, a Soviet monument was dismantled from the central part of the city — an obelisk of glory in honor of soldiers killed in WWII. Earlier, a Soviet tank was removed in the city. We support the derussification of the spaces of our cities and call on all cities of Ukraine to participate!

✅ The city council is also working on the purification of power. In particular, on March 23, the powers of the secretary of the city council, which is a representative of the banned party (OPZZh), were early terminated — she refused to recognize russia as an aggressor country. And at the next regular session of the city council, one of the main issues will be the suspension of MPs' from OPZZh powers during the martial law.

✅ The city supports business and entrepreneurs who were forced to relocate. They are provided with consulting support and a coworking center. It is being opened for closer communication between entrepreneurs who have come from hot zones, local businesses, and authorities.
